The Li Foundation was honoured to support Waves of Life (生命的浪花), a classical and pop music concert jointly presented by the New Horizon Music Society and Hua Xia Philharmonic Society on 6 May 2026 at the Esplanade Recital Studio. The sponsorship reflects the Foundation’s enduring commitment to nurturing the arts and enriching cultural life in the community.
The evening was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including Mr Chee Hong Tat , Minister for National Development, and Mr Poh Choon Ann a long-time patron of Singapore’s arts and cultural community. Mr Lionel Li, Founder of the Li Foundation, also attended in person, a reflection of the Foundation’s heartfelt commitment to the cause.
The two presenting societies have long stood at the heart of Singapore’s choral and Chinese cultural landscape. New Horizon Music Society traces its origins to 1991, when Mrs Kuo Effie Lo, a distinguished Chinese-Singaporean writer and a respected voice in Singapore’s literary and cultural circles , founded its predecessor choir and shaped its founding vision. Hua Xia Philharmonic Society, established in 1994, was likewise born of a shared passion for Chinese culture and classical music. Together, they have nurtured generations of singers and brought communities together through the arts.
Themed around the ebb and flow of human experience, Waves of Life opened with a gaze into the depths of time and unfolded through successive swells of emotion, composing a song of life in which love and resilience intertwined. The thoughtfully curated programme brought together Chinese and Western art songs, beloved folk melodies, and contemporary favourites, from Nanniwan and The Moon Represents My Heart to the Italian classics Ideale and Torna a Sorrento.
The evening culminated in original multi-part choral works celebrating resilience, connection, and hope. Through a cappella works, solos, ensembles, and duets, each singer’s artistry shone through the interplay of voices, drawing the audience into a shared moment of stillness and emotion, with many visibly moved and fully immersed in the music as it unfolded.
By supporting this concert, the Li Foundation reaffirmed its belief in the power of music to inspire, connect, and uplift communities across generations. The Foundation was honoured to stand alongside such dedicated custodians of Singapore’s musical and cultural heritage.
