Advancing Collaborative Philanthropy and Leadership: A Conversation with the Gates Foundation

Lionel, Chairman of Li Foundation, had the pleasure of welcoming Ruixi Hao, a good friend and the Senior Program Officer of the Gates Foundation, to our office on 18 April 2025. We had a meaningful exchange of ideas around philanthropy, leadership development, and cross-border collaboration in Asia’s social sector.

The Gates Foundation was founded in 2000 to fight poverty, disease, and inequity around the world, and is chaired by Bill Gates. Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, it works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives, regardless of background and geography. Since its inception, the Gates Foundation has made over USD 77.6 billion in grant payments across diverse issues like gender equality, global development, global health, global growth, and global policy and advocacy. Within philanthropy, it also functions as a catalyst and convenor by generating high-quality data and evidence to inform interventions, creating market incentives to develop lifesaving products, spurring innovations, and strengthening global cooperation across the public, private, and people sectors.

During the session, Lionel shared with Ruixi about Li Foundation’s recent updates, including working with regional partners on the Inspiring Asia Micro Film Competition and plans to expand the Philanthropic Youth Leadership Program organized with the Ginkgo Foundation. They also discussed and affirmed the progress of an early childhood development collaborative in China that Li Foundation and the Gates Foundation are involved in as core donors. Overall, the visit highlighted the alignment between Li Foundation and the Gates Foundation in advancing impactful, collaborative philanthropy across Asia. Both sides look forward to deepening the partnership to drive sustainable change and develop future philanthropy leaders in the region.
